Teaching Family Homes Awards Volunteer of the Year

Marquette, MI – At the Annual Teaching Family Homes Awards dinner in February, Ric Klingsick was awarded Volunteer of the Year for 2007.  This award is given to recognize the immense benefits that volunteers bring to nonprofit agencies like Teaching Family Homes.

After retiring in 2002 from driving bus for mass transit in Chicago for 22 years, Klingsick retired to the Marquette area and has volunteered with Teaching Family Homes for the past two years on a number of different projects and events.  These include assistance with the Tour Da U.P. 5 day bike ride, landscaping maintenance and development projects, unloading gifts during Operation Good Cheer, mentoring youth on the TFH campus, and dressing up for the holidays as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.  Klingsick came into contact with Teaching Family Homes when looking for a bike tour to participate in and since he had been coming to the U.P. for over 30 years, he chose the Tour Da U.P. bike tour.  This was the beginning of his long-term relationship with Teaching Family Homes and their mission to provide cost-effective care to children and families in need.

His mentee, Stephen, says that “Ric loves hanging out with all the kids.”  Klingsick added, “They are all very special and I enjoy each and every one of them.  Volunteering has given me an opportunity to make my world much bigger and has added an awful lot to my life.”
